New
Pediatric group in town, meet PMG/ Southwest Pediatrics
We recently
met with 3 new wonderful pediatricians and their staff. Their office is
just across the street from the ED in the Mother Joseph Building, Suite
395. It was great to meet them and their excellent setup! They asked us
how we feel about providing care to their patient's in the Children's
Emergency Care area and we are ready! The Southwest Pediatric
Clinic is currently accepting new patients.

Logicare
updates. Currently we are reviewing all of our Logicare Discharge
instructions to pediatric patients. A key update was the review of Fever
at the urging of private pediatricians, family practice physicians and
Nurse Practitioners. We surveyed the literature, looked at what other
children's centers were doing, as well as various web sites to come up
with what we considered to be a good working document. We include the
document here in it's entirety. You can also access other patient
handouts by following the link at the top of this newsletter. Feel free
to use them in your own practice.

Welcome
to Dr. Alejandro Kitzis
The latest
physician addition
to the Providence St. Vincent's Emergency Department is Alejandro Kitzis.
Alejandro is a board-certified Pediatrician, and board-certified
Emergency Medicine physician. He is originally from New Jersey and
graduated medical school from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School in 1998.
He then came to Oregon where he completed consecutive Pediatric and
Emergency Medicine residencies at Oregon Health and Sciences University.
He served as chief resident during his final year of emergency medicine
residency.
After residency, Alex returned to the east coast for one year working at
Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. He missed the Pacific
Northwest and is very happy now to be back in Oregon. Alex's interests
in medicine include pediatric emergency medicine and international
medicine. He has worked in El Salvador, Ecuador and Nepal and is fluent
in Spanish. In his free time, Alex enjoys windsurfing,
skiing/snowboarding, soccer and golf.

Nursing
Update
A visit to
the Emergency Department can be a scary event for any youngster. We are
constantly striving to make each visit as positive an experience as
possible for all of our patients. Therefore, specific rooms are
designated in our Pediatric Pod so that no child will have to wait in
the lobby for care. The Pediatric Pod is considered a "safe
haven" from patient groups who may be more disturbing to children.
Parents are never separated from their children and are encouraged to
assist during exams or procedures.
Our nurses are continually trained in methods to alleviate patient pain
and anxiety while performing painful procedures such as blood draws or
IV insertions. The use of Sweet-ease has successfully reduced pain and
anxiety in infants who have undergone procedures. We also apply LET gel
for appropriate lacerations and promptly treat fevers while children are
waiting to be seen by our doctors if there may be a wait.
All children we treat receive a prize whether it be specialized bandaids,
fun stickers or a small stuffed animal. In addition, we supply crayons
and coloring pages for those children interested in drawing, and each
pod has its own book with over 20 pages to choose from.
Teddy Bear Hospital
On December 2-4, Providence Health Systems sponsored the Festival of
Trees. Part of our contribution was to run the Teddy Bear Hospital. This
was a huge success thanks to our nurses, techs and docs! Children
brought in their own "sick" or "injured" bears or
received free stuffed teddy bears for us to fix! We casted bears with
broken arms, sutured their cuts and listened to their hearts and lungs
in an effort to alleviate fears in children by providing hands-on
experience with some of the things that they may see, feel, or
experience should they come to the hospital.

Pediatric
Surgery News
There has been growth in the children’s outpatient surgery center as
well as an addition to the pediatric general surgery group. The Gerry
Frank Children’s Surgery Center is a state-of-the art facility which
provides pediatric specialty care such as otolaryngology, general
surgery, orthopedics plastic surgery and urology. The center continues
to experience increased utilization while still having potential for
growth. The staff at the center were recently recognized with an award
for their teamwork, training and high patient satisfaction scores.
The pediatric general surgery practice of Dr. Timothy Campbell and Dr.
Mary Alice Helikson has recently welcomed their new partner – (myself)
Dr. Sonia Butterworth. I was trained in Vancouver, Canada at British
Columbia’s Children’s Hospital and have a particular interest in
minimally invasive surgery. My family and I have been enjoying the
transition to Portland and I have already begun to experience a
rewarding practice here in Oregon.
